Facebook ( www.facebook.com) is an online social networking platform that connects people with a community of people with like interests.  The search for friends within this community can be personal friends, existing business clients, or existing groups centered around a topic that you're interested in.  The platform allows users to keep up with friends, upload photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

Abuse of this platform or forum happens when users begin their use of Facebook as an advertising medium for their business.  Any online community will immediately "shun" the newcomer that tries to do this.  The best way to use this platform is to look for existing groups that are formed around topics that are interesting to the newcomer. 

There are few "rules of the road" for these newcomers:

1. Listen before you "speak".  Watch the conversations and catch up on past conversations to get the feel of how the group interacts.
2. Don't start by promoting your business.  In fact, don't even mention it. 
3. Contribute where you believe you are an expert and can offer valuable information.
4. Be interested in what other members of your group have to say
5. Use the different media available to make your Facebook page more interesting such as video, links and photo's.

This is a great media for meeting people you may never have had the opportunity to know.  One associate of ours was able to make a connection to a leader in her field and actually flew to his location to have a one on one meeting -- all because of her activity in Facebook.

This is a great outcome but her success was based on her willingness to contribute to the community and to network and help others within her group.
